Shah Begum was born in Baku in 1917, into a world of family, belonging and promise.

History would carry her far from that beginning. Migration, separation, poverty and personal hardship repeatedly tested her. Yet the defining story of her life is not simply what was taken from her, but what she created from what remained.

Through work, courage, patience and an extraordinary devotion to her children, Begum rebuilt a life from circumstances that might have defeated another person. She became the heart of a family whose branches eventually reached across generations.

Yousef writes as son, witness, researcher and keeper of family memory. His account moves between historical events and intimate recollections: homes, meals, journeys, departures, work, childhood, grief, and the small acts of love through which families survive.

About Yousef Ahadi

The son who carried her story

Yousef Ahadi is the fifth child of Mother Begum and the author and narrator of From the Heights to the Depths: Rising from the Ashes.

He began carrying this book long before he began writing it. From childhood, Yousef was conscious of the struggles surrounding his family. At sixteen, after reading Maxim Gorky's Mother, a thought took root: one day he wanted to tell the world the story of his own mother.

For decades, that ambition remained unwritten. Life intervened. Memory accumulated. The child became a man, and eventually an old man. At seventy, Yousef finally found the confidence to begin telling the story he had carried within him for more than half a century.

This book is therefore more than a biography. It is a son's act of remembrance — an attempt to preserve the life of the woman who taught him perseverance not through slogans, but through the example of her own life.
